SCC's new online classes offer students new learning avenue

Jan 28, 2013 (The Sampson Independent - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Would you like to stay at home in your pajamas and still go to a college class Would you prefer to learn late at night rather than rising early to go to a morning lecture Whatever your preferences are, the new ed2go online classes offered through the Continuing Education division of Sampson Community College can accommodate any and every lifestyle with their flexibility and convenience.

"We officially launched ed2go last Wednesday, Jan. 16. Going forward, class registration will be on the third Wednesday of every month." said Ann Butler, dean of Continuing Education, adding that all of the ed2go online courses being offered will run for six weeks and will conclude with a 10-day grace period at the end.

With 24 hour access, students can complete the online courses any time of the day or night entirely from their home or office.

"Of course, the biggest advantage to taking online classes is that you can learn at your own pace and on your own schedule," noted Butler. "Interestingly, for online learners, the most popular log-in time is midnight with 6 a.m. coming in second." This new learning opportunity may take a little while to catch on, but a few in Sampson County are already taking advantage of the new online courses and all they have to offer.

"We had four people register and no two are taking the same class," shared Butler. "The four classes being taken from the extensive ed2go offerings are "Achieving Success with Difficult People," "Enhancing Language Development in Childhood," "Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2010," and "Building Teams That Work." Among the other courses offered are "Speed Spanish," "Grammar Refresher," and "Computer Skills for the Workplace," to name a few.

Classes specific to teachers are also being offered. Local educators can choose from classes such as "Solving Classroom Discipline Problems," "Survival Kit for New Teachers," "Using the Internet in the Classroom," and "Differentiated Instruction in the Classroom." Butler pointed out that not only are the ed2go online classes convenient but they are also easy on the wallet. "At the current time, all courses we are offering have a $65 registration fee." No matter what courses students choose to take, they will certainly get their money's worth. All courses are project-oriented and include lessons, quizzes, hands-on assignments, discussion areas, supplementary links, and more.

"Last summer, when we were giving consideration to partnering with ed2go to offer online learning opportunities, I did a test run of one of the courses -- digital photography -- to see if I was pleased with the qualifications of the instructor, the course content, the expected learning outcomes, etc," said Butler. "I was most impressed in every and all respects." "Anyone who registers for a class can look forward to exceptionally qualified instructors and challenging, highly interactive instruction," Butler continued. "You have assignments, tests, and the opportunity for discussion with other students who are also taking the same class." Dr. Paul Hutchins, president of Sampson Community College, encourages Sampson locals to take advantage of this new learning opportunity. "This is the first time the college is offering classes like this and we're really excited about it. These online classes are so accessible. They provide enrichment, offering opportunities for people to enhance their skills. For instance, they'd certainly be beneficial for people who are looking to go after promotions at work."
