Windows 8 might have been wowing users all over the world with its drop dead gorgeous looks and improved user interface. But like the the previous operating systems released by Microsoft (News - Alert), many experts are detecting and reporting security issues with the latest operating system. Security loopholes are also reported with other Microsoft products, such as Windows Server 2012 and Internet Explorer 10.
So, although companies may be eager to use these new products from Microsoft, there might be security issues in them which have not been addressed yet. Recently, The Center for Internet Security (CIS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, partnered with Microsoft to help companies deploying the latest Microsoft products with complete configuration security guidelines.
Both CIS and Microsoft have collaborated with security experts to create a comprehensive guideline, which is offered to the public for free. You can download it from through Microsoft’s Security Configuration Manager (SCM) and CIS’s secure configuration benchmarks.
The benchmarks provided by CIS allow users to create security based configuration controls that will help in enhancing the protection of these Microsoft products. Users of these products can now be sure about their security, as these guidelines have been collectively provided by industry leaders and experts, the company has stated.
Apart from this, Microsoft provides other security options like Security Compliance Manager (SCM) tool. It offers baselines for latest Microsoft products such as Internet Explorer 10, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012. Along with that, the tool also provides policies and DCM (News - Alert) configuration packs.
“We’re pleased to announce a security configuration baseline built with consensus from Microsoft, government agencies around the world and the Center for Internet Security,” said Chase Carpenter, Product Unit Manager, Microsoft Solution Accelerators for Security and Compliance. “This effort marks the unification of several industry standards to help simplify deployments and increase supportability of Microsoft technologies.”
Recently, CIS partnered with LabTech to help all government and private enterprises to improve their data protection readiness.
