Microsoft News - Hostway Launches Windows Server 2012 Beta Test Offering

By Allison Boccamazzo, TMCnet Web Editor

Hostway (News - Alert), the largest Hyper-V public cloud provider in North America, has stated the launch of its Windows Server 2012 beta test offering via the new Microsoft Server Operating System. The company is one of only five hosting companies that currently qualify to offer customers this trial as part of Microsoft’s (News - Alert) Go Live Early Adopter Program.

I was able to speak with Aaron Hollobaugh, VP of Marketing at Hostway Corporation, who discussed the new offering exclusively – detailing everything from advantages to expectations of the new trial in the future.

So what can customers expect to see and benefit from when using this new Microsoft server operating system? Hollobaugh explains that, to put it simply, Windows Server 2012 is better optimized for running cloud environments. He even categorized the most important improvements as taking place within four sectors; applications and websites, network virtualization, manageability, and storage.

  • Applications and Websites: Windows Server 2012 has multiple features that enable mission critical applications, improve website density and efficiency, and increase scalability and elasticity for multitenant-enabled applications. It also enhances support for open standards, open source applications, and various development languages.
  • Network Virtualization: The Hyper-V Replica functionality of Windows Server 2012 allows migration and placement of virtualized workloads – from on-premise to a hoster in the cloud, without regard to underlying physical network topology.
  • Manageability: Windows Server 2012 offers a multi-machine management experience, providing the customer with a cohesive view of their servers and roles.
  • Storage: Windows Server 2012 offers continuous availability; if a cloud component fails, there is no blackout period, no service interruption and no lost data.

The trial, which will be offered until the RTM version is released by Microsoft, is expected to peak customers’ interest once there is an increase in the new operating system with existing applications and environments. Hollobaugh did note that being only one of five companies qualified to offer Windows Server 2012 in a hosted environment is “certainly an advantage,” but customer interest is dependent on how quickly the new system is adopted and tested.

So why should you check out the new trial offering? Currently, Hostway is in the process of creating a cloud-based disaster recovery solution using Hyper-v Replica in Windows Server 2012, which will prove to be extremely valuable for customers who have adopted Windows Server 2012, where they will then be able to take advantage of replication servers within Hostway’s geographically dispersed data centers. In order to enjoy these benefits, you have to say adios to your temporary trial and jump on board with Windows Server 2012. One thing’s for sure – you won’t be disappointed.
